Teaching statement
As a teacher I always want to create an adaptable structure throughout teaching. Whether it is by modifying choreography or even the ways it has been taught. I believe every student has their own way of learning and as an educator we are there to create success but not hinder the ways they may be achieved. I believe there is no right or wrong way of learning because we all see things differently. There are so many forms of learning and understanding from visual, auditory, and even being hands on there is just so many possibilities. We should create a structure that can always be changed to the right audience. What good is it to teach if it falls on deaf ears because they could not understand the concept because it was only available one way. Let us open the space to include imagery, handheld objects like scarfs to create visual simulation or even peer review to create a space for growing and learning. Why not open the door to many more learning and understanding if we just took a few more minutes to explain and demonstrate another way.
“If they can’t learn the way we teach, we need to teach the way they learn.” - Ignacio Estrada
Artistic Stament
As a choreographer my goal is to create a dance environment where everyone can have a creative outlet however may seem fit for them. As not only dancers but humans we know words are not the only form of expression, there is so much more. I believe we use our bodies to create dance forms that speak for us and allow for an array of emotions to be felt. I strive to create a safe space that can be an outlet where you can just be within yourself and feel what you need. The way to carry out the creation of a space like this is by having a judgement free zone and being open to learning new techniques others may have. There is no right or wrong when it comes to emotions so why should we feel like we must limit them. Having the freedom throughout choreography and the ability to say and feel everything through different movements is an experience that everyone should be allowed to have.
